The progress of the film industry

Mr. Chairman, the film industry and media arts have a positive economic and cultural impact on our territory. Provides employment and learning opportunities for our residents, offers space for our talented filmmakers to showcase their work and attract production companies outside of the Northwest Territories to create memorable movies using our rugged landscape as background.

Today I am happy to share with you the results of the report on the film industry and media art that I presented before the House today.
Ministries of Industry, Tourism and Investment and Education, Culture and Employment has worked together for the past two years to study the best ways to support the complementary movie industries, tourism and investment through trade and financial section and education, culture and employment through education, as part of the cultural and creative development.
The process began over two years ago when members of the NWT film industry have expressed concern about the need for increased support.
Aware of the need to take a look more closely at the film industry a look, ITI and ECE conducted a review. This close consultation involved in the film and media arts industry TNO - in a workshop last year, the Government of the Northwest Territories and stakeholders to discuss options and develop recommendations for support.
We all agree on the need to improve cooperation between them and the EEC. The GNWT has also undertaken to establish the mandate of the configuration and size of the TNM Film Commission to establish specific financial support for the industry to invest in the training of a professional association, and invest in web development .
Today I am pleased to announce that the Government of the Northwest Territories have made progress in each of these commitments, and the industry is becoming healthier.
Both departments regularly work questions about the film. We restructured the NWT Film Commission and associated add full-time dedicated Commissioner Cinema.
Specific funding of $ 100,000 a year thanks to the help of IIT for entrepreneurs and economic development policy, which aims to provide further support TNM film industry.

With the full support of the GNWT was the NWT Association of Professional Media was formed. This gave the film industry and our more formal government to discuss ways to provide the necessary support.

Last but not least, we have made great progress on a new website of the Commission of the NWT film. This stylish new site, nwtfilm.com, is a resource for industries and companies that want to shoot in the local film and media arts TNM. It also has a guide TNO Cinema providers to promote local industry.
Progress has been made into something more than that identified in this report. ITI, through the NWT Film Commission - and the EEC - recently introduced support and participated in a panel discussion at the first-time filmmaker and producer TNO Forum in September. This type of bilateral dialogue is an important part of working together with industry.
Mr. President, we realize that there is more work to do and this report is just a way to show our support for the film industry and media arts. We will continue to work closely with the industry and I am confident that we will see more incredible work of our local filmmakers and film world, and interest in filming in the Northwest Territories continues to grow.
